Two thousand five hundred and nineteen teachers at national schools received transfers to other national schools, this year.
About 1,072 of them had been serving at the same school for over 10 years, Kurunegala Senior Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said.
He was speaking at a meeting of Kurunegala school heads, which was held in Bingiriya, yesterday.
There are about 39,179 teachers at national schools countrywide of the total 232,964 teachers in the country.
However, teachers who have reached the age of 57 would not be given transfers without their personal consent, Balasooriya said.
Moreover, about 3,772 teacher-trainees who passed out from the 19 National Colleges of Education, last year, too, were given teaching appointments this year to solve the existing shortage of teachers in remote schools, the Senior Education Director added.
