WATCH: Contempt of Court action against 5 SJB MPs for criticizing Political victimization commission

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing incidents of political victimization has decided to file a case with the Court of Appeal against 05 members of the Samagi Jana Balawegay (SJB) on charges of contempt of Court.

SJB MPs Harin Fernando, Nalin Bandara, J.C. Alawathuwala, Mayantha Dissanayake and Sujith Sanjaya Perera appeared before the Commission today after being issued a notice by the PCoI.

The MPs had recently filed a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over the PCoI on political victimization, accusing it of misconduct and misuse of state funds to bypass the country’s rule of law.

The Commission in return had accused the MPs of making derogatory comments about the PCoI and challenging its authority.

“We were told they will file a case against us at the Court of Appeal. We respect the judiciary but not wrong –doings,” SJB General Secretary MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara told reporters.

The 5 SJB MPs who were accused by the PCoI were seen wearing face masks displaying a cross mark while at the Commission’s premises.
The PCoI was appointed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in November 2019 to investigate incidents of political victimization between 2015-2019. It has concluded its proceedings and is set to submit its report this week. (NewsWire)
