Covid fears : 2 suicide deaths reported in Agalawatta & Ja-Ela

Two individuals are reported to have died by suicide in the Agalawatta and Ja-Ela areas respectively due to fears over the coronavirus.

A 72-year-old woman is said to have died by suicide after her daughter and son-in-law were confirmed as coronavirus patients.

The Ja-Ela Police had found the victim’s body inside her residence in Ekala, Ja-Ela.

Meanwhile, a 56-year-old man has died by suicide over fears that he might contract the coronavirus in future.

The victim is reported to have worked as a private bus driver attached to the Nagoda hospital.

The body of the man, who is a father of two, was found near a tree close to his residence in Agalawatta.

He is reported to have worked as a private bus driver at the Kalutara Bus Depot as well.

“My husband was missing from morning. He was anxious and was in fear after a bus driver had contracted the virus. He refused to report to work today. My husband was constantly talking about the coronavirus. He was initially working as a school bus driver. Later due to the coronavirus outbreak he was transferred from Mathugama to Nagoda. He was notified yesterday that one person who had travelled in the bus yesterday had contracted the virus. I think he must have been in fear after receiving this information,” the victim’s wife informed officials during the magisterial inquiry into the death.

The Mathugama Police is conducting further investigations into the incident. (NewsWire)
