The Officer- in- Charge (OIC) of the Anamaduwa Police Traffic Unit has died in a motor accident reported early this morning.
The accident had taken place while the OIC had pursued a lorry in the Kottukachchiya area in Anamaduwa, after receiving a tip-off that a group was illegally transporting cattle.
The vehicle in which the OIC and his counterpart from the Crimes Unit of the Anamaduwa Police were travelling in had met with an accident after colliding with the clock tower in the town.
Ajith Hemantha, the 38-year-old OIC of the Anamaduwa Police Traffic Unit, had died following the accident.
The deceased is as a resident of Nikkaweretiya, while his wife is a Senior Inspector.
The OIC of the Anamaduwa Crimes Unit, who had sustained injuries in the accident, is receiving treatment at the Anamaduwa base Hospital.
The Anamaduwa Police is conducting further investigations into the accident. (NewsWire)
