Why are cricketers wearing two caps in IPL 2020? All you need to know about ICC’s rule about ‘caps’

Twitter was left guessing after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Eoin Morgan was seen wearing two caps during the tie against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

Eoin Morgan-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered a big eight-wicket defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Wednesday (October 21). Batting first, KKR only managed to reach a total of 84 runs even after batting for 20 overs and failed to defend it. RCB only lost two wickets and chased down the target in 14th over. The win saw them jump to the second spot in the points table.

Apart from KKR’s poor batting, skipper Morgan hogged limelight for wearing two caps. Fans on social media were confused to see Morgan and also expressed their queries on various platforms. But it isn’t the first instance where a player was spotted wearing multiple caps in IPL this season. Even at the international level, a number of players have been seen wearing more than one cap.

Earlier, the umpires used to hold a player’s accessories but they aren’t allowed to do so now due to ICC’s post-COVID-19 rules. The guidelines don’t allow umpires to hold caps, sweaters and other items.

“Players and umpires should maintain social distancing on the cricket field and that includes no handing over of player items (cap, towels, sunglasses, jumpers) to the umpire or teammates. Consider adopting a process that will assist the bowler in managing his/her items. Umpires may also be encouraged to use gloves when handling the ball,” the ICC rule states.

The rule was implemented right from the first international game, between England and West Indies, which was the first full-fledged cricketing series after four months of no action. Rahkeem Cornwall drew attention back then for wearing more than one cap. He was seen wearing multiple caps in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) as well.

Coming back to IPL, KKR are placed at the fourth spot with five wins from 10 matches. A couple of wins in the remainder of the tournament will see them qualify for the Playoffs with ease. RCB, on the other hand, sit at the second spot and are sort of confirmed to make it to the next round. (timesnownews)
