The Air Quality Unit of the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has warned that the there is an unusual increase in air pollution in Sri Lanka from Tuesday (27).
The Unit said that a significant increase has been noted in the particulate matter in the airspace of Sri Lanka, affecting a number of areas, including Colombo, Kandy, Puttalam, Vavuniya and Jaffna.
Particulate matter in the airspace of Sri Lanka is reported to have increased by two-folds.
As per the US Air Quality Index, particulate matter 2.5 which has to be on a minimum level, has increased to between 100-150 on the index. This could result in impacting the health of people, the Unit said.
Air pollution in Sri Lanka has also notably decreased in various areas at present due to vehicular movements being restricted as a result of the current coronavirus outbreak.
However, a significant increase in air pollution can be seen in Sri Lanka’s airspace due to the varying wind and rain conditions experienced across the country.
The World Air Quality Index has also reported that Sri Lanka is being affected due to the air pollution in the Indian airspace entering Sri Lanka via strong winds.
Stating that this situation will remain over the next few days, the Air Quality Unit said it could have an impact on children, elderly people, pregnant women, and people with respiratory issues.
People have been requested to continue to wear face masks, refrain from engaging in outdoor activities and sports, and to obtain medical assistance if faced with discomfort during this period, the Air Quality Unit of the NBRO added. (NewsWire)
