State Minister climbs coconut tree

State Minister of Coconut, Fishtail Palm, Palmyra and Rubber product Promotion and Allied Industrial Production and Export Diversification Arundika Fernando is seen climbing a coconut tree in his home garden at Dankotuwa with the help of a coconut tree climbing machine.

State Minister of Coconut, Fishtail Palm, Palmyra and Rubber product Promotion and Allied Industrial Production and Export Diversification Arundika Fernando yesterday climbed a coconut tree to talk about the soaring prices of coconuts in the local market.

Speaking to the media from a top a coconut tree, the State Minister said Coconut prices in Sri Lanka have risen due to increased demand for coconut products in the world market.

The Minister had climbed the coconut tree at his home garden in Dankotuwa with the help of a coconut tree climbing machine manufactured by a person in the Warakapola area.

The Minister who personally tested the machine said that this will be introduced to the local market in the next few months

The Minister who plucked a few coconuts from the tree, said the price of a coconut today has gone up to 100 rupees and a worker who climbs a coconut tree should also be given Rs. 100.

The State Minister also said that there is a difficulty in finding workers for coconut plucking.

The Minister further stated that no matter how high the price of coconut is, no action will be taken to import coconut. The Minister also said that a program will be prepared in the next few days to provide coconut to the people at concessionary prices.
