‘Spark Air’, Sri Lanka’s newest Airline to launch from February

‘Spark Air’, Sri Lanka’s newest Commercial International Airline, will launch from February 2021 with the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport serving as the airline’s hub, the Daily FT reported.

‘Spark Air’ will initially operate two Airbus A330 aircraft for cargo operations due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and will thereafter expand to passenger operations in due time.

Head of Safety Management Systems of Spark Air Ltd. Capt. Uditha Danwatte said the two Airbus A330s will be acquired on dry-lease basis also enhancing opportunities for local talent.

In addition to cargo operations, the company will also operate a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul Facility at the Mattala Airport.

This move will eventually provide employment to over 2,000 highly-skilled locals with recruitment commencing from December, he said.

Capt. Uditha Danwatte further said as the environment was suitable to expand aviation in Sri Lanka, a proposal for the company was considered by four former senior captains with SriLankan Airlines and other international airlines.

The direct investment for the Airline will consist of both local and foreign investors, while the amount remains undisclosed.

Captains Robert Spittel, Ramzi Raheem, Samin Attanayake, Ashan De Alwis and Suranjan De Silva have been listed as Directors of the organisation by the Civil Aviation Authority.

The officers were listed in its public notice for Spark’s application for an Air Operator Certificate, Airline License to engage in International Regular Transport Operations and Charter Operations carrying passengers, cargo and mail.

Capt. Uditha Danwatte added that in order to develop aviation in a country, the countries must consist of more than one carrier, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and India, which would benefit tourism and enhance local employment opportunities. (NewsWire)
