School uniforms from January instead of vouchers

The government has taken measures to provide locally manufactured school uniform material instead of vouchers, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Speaking at the cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department, Minister Rambukwella said Cabinet approval was granted in June this year to provide school uniform materials from local manufactures and the relevant procurement process has been initiated accordingly. But only local textile manufactures have submitted bids and they have already produced 40 percent of the total school uniform material requirement.

It has been confirmed that they will be able to produce the total requirement by January 2021. Considering the facts presented by Education Minister Prof G.L.Peiris on providing school uniform materials, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by him to take necessary measures to purchase the total school uniform materials from local manufactures and to provide them to school children instead of vouchers.
