Red egg at Rs. 17, white Rs. 16.50 from yesterday

Egg Producers’ Association (EPA) Chairman Sarath Ratnayake told the Daily News yesterday that they sell a red egg at Rs. 17 and a white egg at Rs. 16.50 from yesterday (15).

Bakery owners are issued eggs at new prices for a year, he said. He said that poultry farmers produce about eight million eggs per day. During the past two weeks, eggs were sold at Rs. 22 each to cover the high cost of animal feed in the field.

The bakery owners had requested the Government to allow them to import eggs to cut the production cost, he said. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed over this with the Association of the All Ceylon Bakery Owners and the Egg Producers’ Association, he said.
