Ranil to fill vacant UNP posts soon

A special working committee meeting of the United National Party will be held today under party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss filling all vacant posts including Chairman, Treasurer and Deputy Leader. A number of positions in the party fell vacant after those who held these position joined the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in the run up to the last General Election.

All these vacant positions are likely to be filled at a working committee meeting in future.

The party has to take a decision with regard to these vacant positions soon as no position in the party can be vacant for more than two months as per the party Constitution.

A senior member of the party said the Deputy Leader will most probably be appointed without a vote. He said that the party will go for a vote to elect the next deputy leader if only the Working Committee is unable to reach consensus over the right candidate.

The Deputy Leader to be appointed by the Working Committee will be the successor of the party leader and he will assume leadership in the aftermath of the next Provincial Council election.

Party sources said that he will assume leadership in January if the Provincial Council election was not held this year.
