Proportional Electoral System should be replaced - Dinesh

The Proportional Electoral System should be replaced enabling the voters in the respective electorates to elect a member who is accountable for them, said Leader of the House and Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardane.

He said the present government led by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has already paid its attention in this regard.

The Minister expressed these remarks addressing the opening ceremony of the Community Assembly Hall built at Jayamawatha in Maharagama on Sunday. This building was built at a cost of Rs. 1.5 million allocated from the minister’s decentralized funds.

According to the minister, the members of parliament elected under the present proportional system have no better understanding on those who voted them or their whereabouts.

This is an injustice caused to the voters as they are unable to get the support from their representative for the development of the respective localities, he added.
