Program to collect E-waste through post offices

A program will be launched to collect Electronic waste (E-waste) through post offices.

The new initiative will be launched by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) in collaboration with the Department of Posts.

According to the Daily Mirror, it is a CSR project launched by the Department of Posts in line with World Post Day, which falls on 10 October.

The public have been requested to hand over E-waste like mobile phones, computers, televisions, radios, stereos to their respective post offices from 5 to 10 October.

Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne said only domestic E-waste items will be accepted and not industrial items used in companies.

Divisional Secretariat offices will be utilised to accommodate the waste as several Post Offices lack sufficient space, he said.

Meanwhile, a senior official of the CEA said the collected e-waste will be recycled and the items that cannot be recycled will be re-exported. (NewsWire)
