The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) will take trade union action next week (September 21st onwards) if the health authorities do not address the serious issues created during the time of the former Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne. All alleged acts of corruption and malpractices of the former Health Minister should be revealed by the Presidential Commission and needs to be investigated and action taken, GMOA Secretary Dr. Senal Fernando said.
Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, he said that the final approval from Parliament should be obtained immediately for the Minimum Standards of Medical Education.
This was purposely delayed and not done by the former Health Minister in order to allow unqualified medical students with three ‘F’s and who did not do Advanced Level Examination in the Science Stream to become MBBS doctors.
According to Dr. Fernando, elections should be held for the four (4) existing vacancies in the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) immediately.
The henchmen of former Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne SLMC should be removed as soon as possible to re-gain the past glory of the council. “Immediate steps should be taken to halt the irregular inquiries initiated with malicious intentions against the GMOA officials which were initiated during the time of the former Health Minister.
The delay in approval for the grade MO retirement age extension amended by the Cabinet needs to be addressed as soon as possible,” Dr. Fernando said.The former Health Minister appointed his personal staff members into the SLMC ignoring all relevant rules, regulations, traditions and everything in order to allow the students who do not have required minimum basic qualifications to become MBBS doctors through other channels, he added.
