Epidemiology Unit says holding book fair poses threat

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health says large scale events such as book fairs cannot be permitted to be held at a time when the coronavirus was prevalent in the country.

Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera told a media briefing that such events pose a threat to the community as large number of people attend the events.

In the event a COVID-19 infected patient attends such an event it is difficult to trace all those who had attended due to the scale of the event and the risk is large, he explained.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera further said he hoped the organizers of book fairs have completely thought through the plan and intend to adhere to the health guidelines issued by the Health Ministry.

“It has been noted that many Sri Lankans are failing to follow the health guidelines at present. Transport Services are now carrying passengers beyond the seat capacity. The public must remain vigilant as the threat due to COVID-19 is still prevalent in Sri Lanka. Many are seen without facemasks. We urge the public to continue wearing facemasks. The facemask must be worn covering the mouth and nose, and not on the chin”, he added. (NewsWire)
