COVID-19 deaths to top one million worldwide

The number of deaths worldwide is expected to top one million this week as the USA and India still continue to suffer the most due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

Over 920,200 deaths were reported up to today due to the coronavirus with the number of deaths reported from the USA and India topping 1,000 each in a day for successive days.

Around 1,202 deaths were reported in India while the corresponding figure in the USA was 1,094.

While Sri Lanka continued its exemplary record as one of the world’s best, India continued to record 97,654 new cases on Friday. The number of cases reported from India is over 4.658 million, second only to the USA at 6.637 million. The number of deaths recorded in the USA is over 197,500.

India has the second highest number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the world, having overtaken Brazil. This has created a big demand for hospitals and ambulances. The medical services, particularly in smaller cities and rural areas, find it hard to cope, at times.

As the Covid-19 pandemic spreads and case numbers soar in India, a vaccine is keenly awaited.

Serum, an Indian-based company that made billions of doses of vaccines in the past, hopes to roll out a vaccine soon, its CEO Adar Poonawalla told the BBC.
