Child abuse video evidence facility to be re-established

Arrangements have been made to re-establish the facility for recording video evidence of victims of child abuse, National Child Protection Authority Chairman Professor Muditha Vidanapathirana said. “Permission for the recruitment of the number of required personnel for the functioning of the facility has been already sought and the facility would be installed at the Galle Judicial Medical Department at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital,” Prof. Vidanapathirana said.

The new facility is aimed at securing the protection of the child victims and to minimize the secondary victimization of children. After the establishment of the new facility, the video evidence of victimized children would be stored at the new department and produced in courts when child abuse law suits are taken up.

The facility which had been functioning at the Karapitiya Hospital Judicial Medical Department was closed due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, Police officers had to go to Child Protection Authority for recoding video evidence of child abuse cases.
