20 inmates continue hunger strike over several demands

Only 20 inmates from the Boossa Prison in Galle are continuing the hunger strike that was launched on Thursday (10).

Nearly 40 inmates commenced the hunger strike over several demands, including recent security restrictions implemented at the prison.

20 inmates had abandoned the hunger strike last afternoon (13), after realising that their demands will not be considered by authorities.

Meanwhile, the remaining 20 inmates are continuing the strike by refusing to consume food.

On Friday (11), notorious drug lord ‘Kanjipani Imran’, who was also engaged in the hunger strike, was transferred to the Navy Hospital in Boossa and was later brought back to the prison after several medical tests.

The hunger strike was launched against the restriction on visitors, removal of telephone facilities, search operations carried out on the inmates when they were brought to the Prison after being produced in the courts, and demanding to increase the weekly amount that they can pay to purchase additional meals.
