UNP working committe decision on leadership announced

The United National Party (UNP) today reached an agreement to elect a new and young leader for the party during a discussion between current leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the UNP Working Committee.

The UNP Media Unit said an intense discussion was also held on the results obtained by the party in the General Elections 2020.

Members of the Working Committee who had voiced the need for a new leader had urged that their views are taken into consideration and necessary measures are taken to elect a new leader.

The UNP Working Committee along with Leader Wickremesinghe had come to a common consensus to take necessary steps to elect a new and young leader, providing an opportunity for interested members to contest for the position and taking into consideration the views of party members.

The UNP is set to elect a new leader from among recognized members and independent members, and someone who will respect and work for the policies of the party and country.

As the first step, the UNP will draft a program allocating new responsibilities for the leader, introduce a system to provide equal opportunity for interested members to win the leadership post, and elect a new and young leader from within its party members, the UNP Media Unit added. (Newswire)
