Five women politicians had been sent home by voters while electing seven women politicians to the next Parliament of Sri Lanka to be conveyed on August 20.
According to the election results, the women politicians who had been defeated are Vijayakala Maheswaran who contested the Jaffna district from the United National Party (UNP), Hirunika Premachandra who contested the Colombo district from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Chandrani Bandara who contested for the Anuradhapura district from SJB, Thusitha Wijemanna who contested the Kegalle district from SJB and Sumedha G. Jayasena who contested the Monaragala district from Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
The seven women politicians elected to the next Parliament are the former Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi who contested for the Ratnapura district from SLPP (200,977 preferential votes), Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle who contested for the Gampaha district from SLPP (89,329), Rajika Wickramasinghe who contested for the Kegalle district from the SLPP (68,802), Muditha Prashanthi who contested for the Ratnapura district from SLPP (65,933), Geetha Kumarasinghe who contested for the Galle district from the SLPP (63,357), Thalatha Athukorala who contested for the Ratnapura district from the SJB (45,105) and Rohini Kaviratne who contested for the Matale district from the SJB (27587).
