Met. dept. issues red alert over strong winds

The Meterology department in its latest weather advisory has warned that wind speed over land areas can increase up to 55-65kmph over the island particularly in the Northern, North-central, Western, Souther and Northeastern provinces. As well as Trincomalee and Matale districts along the western slops of the Central hills.

"There is a high possibility to increase the wind speed
up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanturai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. The mentioned sea areas can be rough to very rough at times."

The other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times.
There is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Beruwala to Hambantota via Galle, may experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having 2.0 – 2.5m height (this is not the height of nearshore waves).

Naval and fishing communities are requested to be vigilant in this regard.
