Govt. should fulfill promises - AKD

The newly elected Government can no longer give excuses that it has no Legislative power to address the country’s problems, National People’s Power Colombo District leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday.

He pointed out that the people have placed their trust in the President and the Government and have given them a possible two-thirds majority in Parliament.

“Thus, it is the responsibility of the government to cater to the needs of these people while ensuring their economic, democratic and social needs,” Dissanayake pointed out.

Dissanayake made these observations at a press briefing held at the NPP headquarters in Colombo yesterday.

“This entire time, following its election, the Government’s main excuse to the people was that it has no power to take certain decisions. Now, people have given them a strong majority. Considering the other political forces that the government has aligned itself with, the Government will have a two thirds majority. Now, they cannot keep complaining that they do not have enough power to take decisions. The Government should now start fulfilling its promises to people,” Dissanyake said. He said the major defeat suffered by the United National Party is the people’s response to the failed Government that ruled the country for the last five years. “Wickremesinghe suffered the consequences of an unsuccessful Government which reached the maximum point of political failure,” Dissanayake pointed out. Dissanayake also said that they also believe that the country needs a new Constitution and they are looking forward to the Government presenting a new Constitution that would hopefully establish democracy and not dictatorial rule. Speaking of the results recorded by the NPP, Dissanayake said they are not fully satisfied with the results, however, they will gracefully accept the people’s choice of leaders.
