Excise Dept to launch program to minimise damages to environment from liquor sales

The Excise Department is to introduce a new system to minimize environmental pollution caused by the discarding of empty liquor bottles.

The Department said over 300 million liquor bottles and 160 million beer cans had been purchased in 2019.

The new system looks to encourage liquor consumers to return empty bottles instead of discarding it on the roadside.

The Excise Department is to introduce the new system following reports of alcohol consumers discarding empty 175 ltr liquor bottles on the roadside.

As the first step under the new system, the Excise Department intends to provide a refund for every empty 175 ltr alcohol bottle returned to any liquor outlet.

The Excise Department is also considering the introduction of machines to crush beer cans in an attempt to prevent empty cans from being dumped on the roadside. (Newswire)
