PHIs back on duty after meeting with PM

All Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) islandwide will report for duties from today (29),

PHI s Association President Upul Rohana told the Daily News yesterday.

Rohana said this decision was taken following a lengthy discussion that they had with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Public Health Inspector’s Union called off their strike after a two week long hiatus after they were excluded from being granted powers in the gazette pertaining to ensuring health guidelines for the upcoming general election.

The PHI’s Union held a meeting with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa after which they decided to withdraw their strike action. It was reported that although they had held discussions with Health Ministry officials and other factions, it had been futile. They were granted a sitting discussion with the Prime Minister following the intervention of former MP Namal Rajapaksa.

Officials from the Attorney General’s Department who were present at the discussion yesterday had informed the PHI officers that they were already vested with powers in this regard and it was confirmed by the Health Ministry Secretary.
