Narcotic, organised gang raids continue

Police Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne said the STF has been conducting many raids against organised crime groups and drug operations so far this year and since January 62 raids have been carried out against organised crime groups and 70 suspects have been arrested.

“Similarly 1,407 drug raids have been conducted and 1,303 suspects have been arrested so far this year under the provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.

Police have also conducted 750 raids pertaining to heroin and 775 suspects have been arrested since the beginning of this year. During these raids 116 kg of heroin had also been seized,” SSP Senaratne said. He further noted that during the raids conducted by the STF they had carried out 60 raids on ICE drugs and 77 suspects had been arrested while 4kg of ICE had been seized.

The STF had also conducted 273 raids pertaining to kerala Cannabis and arrested 279 suspects and seized 1,602 kg of Kerala Cannabis, carried out 109 Cannabis raids and arrested 100 suspects while 3,439kg of Cannabis had been seized. Another 215 raids had been conducted on Cannabis plantations and 72 suspects had been taken into custody by the STF.

The STF had also conducted 136 raids on illegal weapons and recovered 3 pistols, 4 revolvers, 15 T/56, 45 shot guns, 80 guns and 168 special weapons during special operations including 1018 live amo hand grenades etc. and 84 suspects had been arrested. In addition, the Police Spokesman said that the STF had carried out many arrests pertaining to the underworld activates and drug operations.

“Yesterday, a 52-year-old criminal group suspect was arrested in the Wellawa Police division and the STF had seized a T56 magazine and ammunition. These weapons were hidden in the Wellawa area to be used for criminal activities. The investigation has been handed over to the CID to determine if these criminal group is connected with other criminal groups and the assets in their possession would be investigated by the special unit,” SSP Senaratne noted.

These operations are being conducted by the STF under the guidance of the Head of the STF DIG Waruna Jayasundara under the orders of the IGP on the supervision of the Defence Secretary.
