LPL may be postponed again

Daily News : The Lankan Premier League (LPL), which was scheduled to be played from August 8 to 20, is likely to be a doubtful starter due to the escalation of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which has affected several related avenues, including the closure of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).

This prestigious T-20 tournament which was to involve five teams, including a maximum of six overseas players, was scheduled to commence soon after the General Elections on August 5. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and to the uncertainty of the spreading of this virus, the SLC is likely to postpone the tournament to a later date, probably in the month of September.

One of the key reasons behind this was obtaining the services of foreign players to enlighten the tournament, which also had an impact on Television broadcasters.

Earlier, authorities disclosed that the BIA was to reopen for International flights and passenger travel from August 1, which later moved out to 15 of the same month. But with the increase of the virus cases, the BIA authorities have hinted that there might be a further delay of the reopening, which they failed to disclose an exact date.

SLC was on the verge of finalising the franchisers for the teams and putting the finishing touches of the tournament, which was a must to unearth the hidden talents of the players. SLC organised a similar tournament of this nature way back in 2012 involving seven teams. The team Uva Next clinched the Championship, and Shaminda Eranga was adjudged the Player of the Tournament.
