Jordan Lankan workers clash : SL embassy issues clarification

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Jordan has clarified that a group of its staff members being held hostage had led to a clash involving Sri Lankan migrant workers and the Jordanian Police in Karak yesterday.

The Embassy said its Labour staff who had visited the Camel and Wega factory in Karak had been held hostage for over 5- hours by a group of Sri Lankan migrant workers.

The workers who are a group of unemployed Sri Lankan migrants had held the officials’ hostage requesting that they be immediately repatriated to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lanka Embassy further said that the Jordanian Police had been called to diffuse the situation in the factory and to rescue the Embassy officials.

The Jordanian Police is reported to have fired tear gas on the Sri Lankan migrant workers who had staged a protest upon their arrival.

At least 500 Sri Lankans had staged the protest when the Jordanian Police fired tear gas. (Newswire)
