Counting begins on August 6

The National Election Commission announced that the counting of ballot papers of the General Election 2020 will commence at 8.00 a.m. on August 6.

When asked by the media, what time the initial results of the polls could be announced, Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said the initial results are expected to be announced by evening on the same day, but said he cannot be certain.

He said that nothing is certain in life and he did not want to commit himself by specifying a definite time as it is something that could not be predicted definitely.

Deshapriya said the official poll cards for the General Election will be handed over to the Department of Posts from July 11 to 13. The distribution of poll cards will be completed by July 29.
