PCR or COVID-19 tests are to be conducted on nearly 119 persons who had visited inmates at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre- East Kandakadu over the past few months.

Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said measures are underway to trace the individuals.

The quarantine centre at Kandakadu has been converted into a hospital to treat those infected with COVID-19 at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre- East Kandakadu, he said.

The latest development comes, after another 196 persons were detected with COVID-19 at the centre.

Director- General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe said the detections were made following the results of 338 PCR tests conducted so far on inmates and staff at the centre.

A total of 252 persons, including inmates and staff from the centre, have been infected with the virus.

Another 8 instructors from the rehabilitation centre, who were on leave, have been advised to return to the centre and will undergo PCR testing.

Another 50 inmates who were sent to Hendala after undergoing rehabilitation are also set to be traced and will undergo PCR testing, Dr. Jasinghe said.

Dr. Jasinghe further said that PCR tests will continue at the rehabilitation centre as more patients are being detected.

PCR tests and quarantine will be imposed on inmates who had left after undergoing rehabilitation at the centre and those who had associated with the rehabilitated inmates, he added.
A female from Marawila, who served as an instructor at the centre, has been placed in self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

Nearly 40 persons from 10 families in Marawila who are suspected to have come into contact with the woman have also been placed in self- isolation.

An outbreak of the coronavirus was reported at the Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre- East Kandakadu after an inmate from the Welikada prison had tested positive for COVID-19.

The inmate had reportedly undergone rehabilitation at the centre for a period of 3 months. (Newswire)
