SLPP condemns Karuna’s statement

The SLPP, which deplored the statement on the killing of soldiers by Karuna Amman, said yesterday that it bears no responsibility whatsoever for the statements made by the former Eastern Province LTTE leader.

SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said that while Karuna Amman was working with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa he gave his fullest support to defeat LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. “The movement now led by Karuna Amman is a different scenario. He is not a part of SLPP and he is contesting from Digamadulla from an opposing party,” Kariyawasm said, addressing a media briefing at SLPP headquarters.

Kariyawasam also highlighted the fact that no discussions had taken place with Karuna Amman regarding a Parliamentary post via the National list.

Moreover he said that the individuals change their ideologies when they combine with the Opposition.

“This country should stand as a unitary state and all our endeavors are to go forward as a unitary state.”

Furthermore he criticized Harin Fernando’s statements condemning Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith who is accepted and appreciated by the entire world. “It is disappointing that the Opposition is stooping that low to create an ethnic conflict prior to the elections. We invite the public to weigh those facts before voting. These kinds of acts suggest the political implosions that had occurred due to improper guidance by the leaders of their parties,” he added.
