Public transportation to recommence in all districts from Monday, 8 June.

Public transportation, including buses and trains, is to recommence in all districts from Monday, 8 June.

The Ministry of Passenger Transport Management said all public transportation, will recommence from Monday under the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

Minister of Passenger Transport Management Mahinda Amaraweera drew the decision during a discussion with high ranking officials of public and private transportation Institutions today.

The recommencing of all public transportation from Monday (08) and the possible obstacles that could be faced, were discussed during the meeting.

Minister Amaraweera said under the current circumstance, the 5300 public buses and 23000 private- owned buses in Sri Lanka are insufficient for the transportation of the public.

He said a number of issues have arisen with public transportation being operated on seat capacity based on the Health Ministry guidelines.

As a result, buses used for school transport and tourism purposes will be temporarily included for public transportation, the Ministry said.

The temporary registration of buses used for other purposes to be involved in public transportation will commence from tomorrow (03), Minister Amaraweera said.

However, the decision to further relax the operation of public transportation will depend on the instruction of the Health Ministry based on the COVID-19 situation in the country and the behaviour of the general public, he said.

The Minister also requested the transportation institutions to prioritise health safety measures, adding that Military assistance will be utilised for the operation of public transportation.
