Parties with internal rifts have no future: PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday that when a political party has internal rifts, it is not only difficult for them to stay true to their original identity, but also leave their supporters indecisive when it comes to elections.

Similarly, the United National Party (UNP), in its current state, has no way of moving forward, the PM said. He was speaking at a meeting held in Bingiriya, Kurunegala.

Many UNPers have left their party and joined the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) because they feel the former has no future, he said, requesting the citizens of the Kurunegala District to vote for the SLPP at the upcoming general election. The people of this country deserve lasting peace and prosperity, and for that to happen, a party with clear vision needs to be in power.

The Premier said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has plans to lead Sri Lanka into such a future. He also said that the 19th Amendment also needs to reassessed as it puts the nation at risk.
