‘Mangala’s withdrawal may give SLPP additional seat’

With former Minister Mangala Samaraweera’s withdrawal from the 2020 Parliamentary election, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has a good chance of gaining another seat in Parliament, former MP Kanchana Wijesekera said. He was speaking at a meeting organised by Municipal Councillor Nihal Ranjith in Weliweriya, Matara, last Sunday.

Around 659,587 registered voters in the Matara District will elect seven MPs to Parliament, and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is confident of retaining the five seats they held in the last Parliament. Six of the 10 nominated by the SLPP to contest the upcoming Parliamentary election from the District are former MP’s (five elected by the people, and one from the national list).

With seven of the 10 contestants attending Sunday’s meeting at Weliweriya, Wijesekera quipped that they were more intent on gaining additional votes for the party, rather than canvas for preferential votes.

He called upon those present to elect those who would be a strength to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and assist him to fulfil his vision of a prosperous nation.
