Corruption cases against Johnston postponed

Five corruption cases filed against Ports and Shipping Minister Johnston Fernando and two others, were postponed yesterday until December 4 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

Fernando has been charged with causing the government a loss of Rs.40 million through unlawful means, by hiring 153 Cooperative Wholesale employees for election work during the between 2010 and 2014.

President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa, appearing on behalf of Minister Johnston Fernando, said at the hearing that the Colombo High Court has issued an Interim Order preventing the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court from hearing the corruption cases till November 24, 2020.

Accordingly, the cases against Minister Fernando, former CWE (Lak Sathosa) Chairman Eraj Fernando, and the former Minister’s Private Secretary Raj Mohideen Mohammad Sakeer, were postponed till December 4.
