76 firing weapons : Police arrests 25,000 suspects in a special operation

Police has arrested more than 25,000 suspects with 76 firing weapons, explosives, and illegal liquor during a special operation conducted island-wide from 06th June to 12 midnight yesterday (20th), stated Police Media Spokesman SSP Jaliya Senaratne.

Among these suspects are 6,420 individuals arrested for illegal liquor related charges. Police has found more than 5 kgs of heroin, 217 kgs of Cannabis and around 760 grams of Ice, a banned narcotics substance.

Further, 52 suspects have been taken into police custody with firing weapons, live ammunition, a knife and 3 swords.

06 suspects were arrested with 367 grams of explosives, 23 detonators and 07 hand grenades during this operation.

5,574 suspects were arrested for possession of 179,782 litres of illegal liquor in total.

Apart from this, 5,110 individuals who had violated court warrants and 8,750 persons who had committed other offences were arrested during this 14-day period.
