Ratnapura High Court Judge Nawarathne Marasinghe pronounced judgment against a teacher who was proved to have committed rape of a 10-year old student inside a classroom, whereas the accused was punished with rigorous imprisonment for 18 years, while he was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000/- and Rs. 500,000/- as compensation to the victim.
The judgment was pronounced on the 25th of June against a resident of Balangoda named Herath Mudiyanselage Somawardhana, who was a school teacher by profession at the time he committed the grievous offence and was charged of rape of a 10-year old girl between the time period of 09th August and 15th September in 2006.
