The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA); together with the ‘Eastern Social Welfare Society’ (ESWS), a Korean non-governmental organisation; has donated 1,000 emergency relief packages to the Kandy District Secretariat.

The packages, which cost a total of Rs.15.1 million, consist of commodities such as rice and sugar, as well as hand sanitisers, KOICA stated in a recent press release.

At the donation ceremony, the ESWS said, “We hope this donation will help vulnerable groups facing long-term curfews and financial difficulties. The ‘Eastern Social Welfare Society’ will continue to stand with Sri Lanka to overcome COVID-19.”

The Korea International Cooperation Agency is the Korean government agency for grants and funding. KOICA has been supporting Sri Lanka since 1991, and is currently implementing a three-year education support project in collaboration with the ESWS, to improve the education standards in Kandy’s estate sectors.

As of May 21, there have been a total of 15 confirmed COVID-19 cases reported from Kandy.
