Three elderly women died and several others were hospitalized following a stampede at a private residence along the Maligawatta Jummah Masjid area during a private aid distribution program which was held today.
Sources say four of those who were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital are also critical condition. Police confirmed that six individuals have been arrested over the incident.
Police spokesperson Jaliya Senarante told media that the stampede occurred when a group of individuals were distributing cash to area residents in a private donation program.
"The Maligawatta police has commenced investigations into the incident," he said.
