Electricity bill will be calculated for units used

Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said today that electricity bills will be calculated only taking into the consideration the number of units used and no additional charges will be added to the bills.

He further said that there is no decision for any power cuts, power failures or rate hikes in the face of the current situation.

Minister Amaraweera said that  consumers do not need to panic of having to pay a large amount of money at once when they received electricity bills of previous two-three months together.

Since consumers are unable to pay electricity bills due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country, the Minister has advised the CEB to ensure that consumers will not face disconnection or receiving red bills.

A mechanism will be created allowing consumers in curfew relaxed ares to pay their electricity bills on an installment basis and sufficient time period will be given for them to settle the bills.

However, the Power and Energy Ministry requests the public to settle the bills  as soon as they received electricity bills.
