Sanasa General Insurance enables local farming communities

  • The German Government through GIZ in collaboration with Sanasa General Insurance, educate and empower small and medium farming communities, using technology to secure maximum returns for their crops
On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is supporting a joint initiative with SANASA Insurance to provide Sri Lankan farmers with online farming insurance facilities that would eliminate the need for rural farming communities to visit an insurance company or for an agent to visit a farm. This initiative gives farmers easy and convenient access to insurance wherever in the country they maybe. This initiatives is a simple and secure online insurance platform to support the local farming community to reduce risk related to weather, pest and diseases, wild animals and other forms of agriculture such as lifestock risk. The platform gives local farmers access to a host of insurance products offered by SANASA under two main categories – weather index-based policies and indemnity policies. Apart from simplifying insurance purchasing and claims processing, users can also benefit from a host of free value-added services built into the web and mobile based iFarm platform. This in turn supports farmers to earn a reliable income for themselves and their families even if their crop fails. Since the launch in 2019, many farmers across the country have downloaded the app, the ones that have used it have benefited from peace of mind knowing that their crop is insured and having access to monitor market prices of crops etc. Farmers will also have access to information in modern farming methods, enabling them to boost the yields.   Speaking about the partnership with SANASA, Mr Siva from GIZ, said, “We are very happy to assist SANASA Insurance in this initiative to help the people of Sri Lanka in the development of agricultural techniques and technology such as simplified access to insurance. With the launch of the iFarm app done in partnership with SANASA Insurance we are able to help farmers throughout the country with the online insurance and other resources. Farmers are able to use the technology where there is limited access to human recourses and expertise to assist them with insuring their farming property or livestock and gather information on crop planting, weather patterns, market prices of crops and more.” Mr. Siva further added, “There is an increasing impact in our environment because of climate change. GIZ have been working with various stakeholders of the SME and MSME stakeholders across Sri Lanka for a number of years to educate and enable farming communities, and these partnerships have grown over the years. Sri Lanka and Germany share the same interests of finding solutions for the adverse effects of climate change to the farming communities. We hope these joint collaborations will help find joint solutions. GIZ, works on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which is a German federal enterprise in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development which operates in more than 130 countries worldwide and draws on a wealth of regional and technical expertise.”
