LECO and CEB to suspend all disconnections

In a communique issued today, the Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) announced that it has taken a directive to suspend all disconnections due to the prevailing situation in the country.

"LECO has decided to suspend the non-payment disconnection of electricity connections of customers in their licensed area due to the prevailing situation in the country," their statement read.

It was noted that since consumers were unable to access bill payment systems, there will not be any disconnections until the situation returns to normality.

The management of LECO was prompted to reach this decision following instructions by the Power and Energy Ministry to avoid unnecessary exposure of customers attempting to pay their electricity bill.

During this period of non-payment disconnection suspension, starting from 18th March, charges pertaining to delay in payment will also not be added to the bill, chairman of LECO Athula de Silva said.

Similarly, the Ceylon Electricity Board too had reached the same decision following a meeting with the Minister.
