Curfew imposed to prevent spread of COVID-19 - Army Chief

The island-wide curfew has been declared to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus in the country, said the Head of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of Covid-19 Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva.

Issuing a statement this morning (21) he said, “So far the Coronavirus infection is being reported from one particular section and that is why we needed to take these measures to prevent it spreading.

Currently, there are 22 quarantine centres in operation which is facilitating the quarantine measures for 3063 persons including 31 foreigners.

Hence, the curfew has been imposed to prevent it from spreading throughout the country. Around 11,842 persons are in self-quarantine.

The police is on full alert and we are carrying out our efforts systematically.

So far only one military officer has contracted the Coronavirus and we have not had any further reports,” Lt. Gen. Silva said in his statement.
