The government has already laid a solid foundation to secure a strong House in the coming Parliamentary election, International Co-operation State Minister Susil Premajayantha yesterday said.
Premajayantha was addressing a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday morning.
Premajayantha said that Parliament may be dissolved by March 1 and the UNP will record the lowest number of votes they have ever received at the elections.
Premajayantha said the UNP is suffering the most critical internal dispute ever in its history now and it heralds a clear split in the party.
“The UNP has given Sajith Premadasa only the ‘Henduwa’ (spear), not the ‘Elephant’,” Premajayanatha said.
“There are signs that predict a significant change in the outcome of the general election. There was a myth in the political arena that a main political party cannot secure a victory in the election without the support of minority parties. At the last presidential election, we proved it otherwise. The United National Front (UNF) will not get the exact number of votes they received at the Presidential Election as the Tamil political parties will be competing separately for the general election. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will get only one seat through the national list. It seems that the UNP is setting the background for the government to easily secure a victory. The President and the Prime Minister are establishing good policies and taking measures to claim a strong House,” he seaid. Premajayantha said the present government will give government jobs for those who have low educational qualifications, give jobs for 50,000 graduates, grant tax cuts, give concessionary loans for small and medium entrepreneurs and concessions for SME entrepreneurs who are in the crib. Premajayantha added that the government, by establishing close connections with India, will face the effects of Coronavirus epidemic on world economy.
He said the government was efficient in taking precautions against Coronavirus while assuring the security of Sri Lankan nationals living in China.
Premajayantha denied allegations against the composition of the diplomatic group that participated in the Prime Minister’s recent tour to India. “Allegations have been levelled against this delegation of 21. It comprised nine diplomats. Arumugam Thondaman and Douglas Devananda are two of the most qualified politicians in this tour. Another parliamentarian, secretaries to President and the Foreign Affairs Minister participated, four people of the back staff, two delegates from the Foreign Affairs Ministry, four from the Defense Ministry and a media coordinator also participated. This Indian tour is a tradition that every newly appointed government in our country takes part,” he said.
