Harassment of tourist by Weligama trishaw driver; investigation ordered

The three-wheeler mafia surrounding tourist hot spots once again surfaced when a video started circulating on social media recently of a tourist being harassed by a three-wheeler driver in Weligama. Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga requested the Inspector General of Police to carry out a special investigation regarding the incident.

The video footage depicted, a female tourist and a trishaw driver attached to a well-known online taxi service being harassed at the Weligama train station by a local three wheeler driver.

After the controversial footage went viral on social media, Weligama Urban Council Chairman Rehaan Jayawickreme had met with the local three wheeler drivers and urged them not to jeopardize the tourism industry which is a main source of income for the people of Weligama area and the country by acting in a very unbecoming manner.

The Chairman also stated that “the Weligama Urban Council does not endorse this type of unlawfulness and is firmly committed to looking after the welfare of all those that visit the Home of the Bay.”

A similar incident came up on social media where a tourist was harassed close to Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, which was also concerning an online taxi service hire.
