Ranjan’s nomination at upcoming election in doubt - UNP MP

UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake’s nomination at the upcoming General Elections is doubtful in the wake of controversial voice recordings that had leaked-out, UNP MP Wijayapala Hettiarachchi said.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sirikotha UNP Headquarters yesterday, Hettiarachchi observed that MP Ramanayake would have to clear his name to be eligible to get the nomination from the party.

Responding to a question by a journalist, the MP however said the party would wait till a formal charge sheet is submitted to court in order to proceed with disciplinary inquiry against MP Ramanayake. “MP Ramanayake’s recordings have put the party in trouble, but he also worked hard for the party. We have no question that there should be a disciplinary inquiry, but first the Government should charge him and proceed to the court.

The Anunayake Thera expressed these sentiments delivering an Anusasana when Opposition Chief Whip Gayantha Karunatilleke called on him after paying homage to the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Kandy yesterday.

Ven. Wimaladhamma Anunayake Thera said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa seemed to have a salutary programme and an interest in rebuilding the country. This has been reflected in the positive measures he has taken in this regard.

He said the country’s public service was in a weak state and some intervention was a dire need to correct this situation.

The Anunayake Thera said he highly appreciated the surprise fact funding visits made by the President to state institutions. He said bribery and corruption was rampant in the country and honest and principled politicians were needed to save the country from this perilous situation.

MP Gayantha Karunatillake also called on the Malwatte and Asgiriya Prelates at their respective temples and received their blessings. He also briefed the prelates about the future policy and programme of the UNP.

Parliamentarians Lucky Jayawardene and Mayantha Dissanayake, former Central Provincial Council Minister Tilina Bandara Tennakoon, former Provincial Council members Chanaka Ailapperuma, Hidayith Sattar and Lafir Hadjiar were also present on the occasion.

Most Ven. Dimbulkumbure Wimaladhamma Anunayake Thera invoked blessings on Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunatilleke.
