Warning of heavy rain

Issuing a special warning on heavy rain are likely to occur at most parts of the island, due to a low level atmospheric disturbance in the southeast of Sri Lanka prevailing showery condition in the Eastern, Uva, North-Central and Northern provinces is likely to enhance, stated the Department of Meteorology.

Very heavy showers around 200 mm are likely at some places in Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee Monaragala, Polonnaruwa, Badulla, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts.

Heavy showers of about (100-150) mm are likely in the Anuradhapura, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya and Matale districts.

Fairly heavy showers of about (75-100) mm are likely in Galle, Kaluthara, Rathnapura, Kegalle and Hambanthota districts.

Fairly strong gusty winds up to (40-50) kmph can be expected in North-Western, Northern and North-Central provinces and in Hambanthota district.

The Department of Meteorology advises that people should seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees, avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms, avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms, avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc , Drivers and people using roads in the hilly areas are requested to be vigilant, take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity. Beware of fallen trees and power lines, beware of fallen trees and power lines and for emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
