Speaker recognized Ranil as Opposition Leader

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, recognized leader of the United National Front for Good Governance (UNFGG), Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

Posting a Twitter message, the Speaker said that the recognition of the Opposition Leader was done “upholding established Parliamentary traditions that should not be violated.”

In his Twitter post the Speaker said, “Recognition of the Leader of the UNFGG as the Leader of the Opposition was done upholding established Parliamentary traditions that should not be violated. While I empathize with the challengers too, it is best that a party’s internal disputes are settled from within.”

Two factions of the UNF had written to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya separately, with one faction requesting that Sajith Premadasa be appointed as the Opposition Leader, which was signed by around 45 MPs. However, the General Secretary of the UNP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had written to the Speaker seeking the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Opposition Leader.

However, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya noted that the United National Party should resolve its internal disputes “from within.”
