Several ministers step down

Several government ministers yesterday stepped down from their posts following the victory claimed by the President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Election 2019.

Among the ministers who stepped down from their posts were United National Party (UNP) MPs Harin Fernando, Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrama, Ruwan Wijewardene, Karunarathna Paranawithana, Kabir Hashim and Ajith P. Perera.

UNP Badulla District MP Harin Fernando stepping down from his post as the Sports, Telecommunication and Foreign Employment Minister said in his official Twitter account, “Respecting the people’s mandate, I am stepping down as the Minister of Sports, Telecommunications and Foreign Employment. I am also resigning from my positions in the UNP. I take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported me.”

Meanwhile, Kalutara District MP Ajith P. Perera yesterday stated that he will resign from his position as the Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology Minister with immediate effect. He also pointed out to the New Democratic Front (NDF) Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa that the Presidential Election 2019 was “a well fought battle and the country needs your leadership at this critical time.” Perera further said “We will all continue fighting for democratic governance and we will fight to protect the UNP and the rights of Sri Lankan citizens.” It was also reported that MP Mangala Samaraweera has announced his imminent resignation from his position as the Finance Minister with immediate effect to the President and the Prime Minister. MP Kabir Hashim has also resigned from the chairmanship of the UNP.
