Royal Park murderer pardoned, freed

Jude Shramantha Anthony Jayamaha, who was sentenced to death over the Royal Park murder case in 2005, was released on a Presidential Pardon and walked out of the Kuruwita Prison around 4.30 pm last Saturday, according to Prison officials.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons T.M.J.W.Thennakoon had received the document signed by the President to grant Presidential pardon to the convicted Jayamaha on Saturday.

He was accused of strangling to death 19-year-old Swedish national, Yvonne Jonsson on June 30th 2005. The autopsy report stated that the victim had been strangled with the clothes she was wearing and she had 64 fractures on her skull by dashing her head on the floor.

Following a lengthy trial in the Colombo High Court, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

However, in 2012, the Appeals Court overturned the sentence on Shramantha Jayamaha from 12 years to a death sentence.
