Jaywalkers beware...

The Police Department will fine pedestrians who do not use the pedestrian crossings and instead cross roads arbitrarily.

Therefore, the police will nab such offenders and produce them before a court of law.

Traffic DIG Lalith Pathinayake said people will be made aware that crossing the road other than at specified pedestrian crossings is a punishable offence. These awareness programmes would be held until December 31 and the law prohibiting pedestrians from crossing roads at unmarked areas would be strictly enforced from January 1, 2020. The DIG also stated that the pavements would be developed enabling pedestrians to safely use them and in places where the pavements are being dug up, instructions have been issued to expedite the repair work and have the pavements in good condition for pedestrians’ safety.
